Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. Her aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt worked the night shift as nurse so she could follow her passion for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and influenced her to say something through the arts. Even though DuVernay lived within Compton with her family, she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her summers in Selma and decided to make the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still in college. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage of the home of a juror. In the course of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
